- Mogens Herman Hansen obituaryby Oswyn Murray on 8. juli 2024 at 16:53
Danish historian who transformed our understanding of the way Athenian democracy functionedThe term democracy emerged in the classical city-state of Athens to denote power exercised by common people, at that point men who were not slaves. From around the sixth century BC, officials were chosen by lot and were subordinate to a citizens’ assembly that made decisions. Writers on this process tended to describe it in theoretical terms. But the Danish historian Mogens Herman Hansen, who has died aged 83 after a short illness, transformed understanding of how Athenian democracy functioned by approaching it empirically, through a series of simple questions. He did this from two points of view: practical and constitutional. First, he looked at physical constraints, asking how many men could be accommodated on the Pnyx, the hill in central Athens that was home to the assembly, in its different configurations; how long sessions lasted; how long speeches were; how the assembly voted; how often it met; how leaders asserted their authority and established any continuity of policy; and what social classes they came from. - Ganni: what’s the secret of the covetable Danish label’s success?by Lucianne Tonti on 27. juni 2024 at 5:00
Several well-known independent fashion firms have gone down in the past year, yet Ganni continues to go from strength to strength. Here, its founders reveal why it’s boomingIt’s the middle of August 2023 and the Danish It-girl brand Ganni is throwing a party to celebrate the last night of Copenhagen fashion week. In a room hidden behind a heaving dancefloor, Paloma Elsesser, the curve New York model who opened Ganni’s show hours before, is dominating the karaoke room and creative director Ditte Reffstrup is dancing on the bar.It feels like a celebration from a different era. Independent designers are struggling. The news of Matches Fashion’s closure in March was followed by announcements that the Vampire’s Wife and Mara Hoffman would shut down. Roksanda had filed a notice of intent to appoint an administrator, a fate avoided only by the entrance of a buyer. All offer similarly playful garments and are, in many ways, despite higher prices, Ganni’s peers. - Rose review – Sofie Gråbøl works hard in heartfelt healing journey through schizophreniaby Peter Bradshaw on 24. juni 2024 at 10:00
Director Niels Arden Oplev has written movingly of his intimate knowledge of the mental illness, but this story is soaked in treacly good tasteDanish film-maker Niels Arden Oplev, director of the original Girl With the Dragon Tattoo with Noomi Rapace, has written movingly about the true story behind his very personal new film. It is inspired by his sister who has schizophrenia, perhaps triggered by heartbreak she experienced in her personal life as a teenager working in her gap year in France, but who in middle age went on a cathartic healing journey back to that country with her sister and brother-in-law.Sofie Gråbøl (star of the Scandi noir TV hit The Killing) plays a fictional version: Inger has schizophrenia and lives in residential care; she is about to take a bus trip to France with her caring, if nervous, sister Ellen (Lene Maria Christensen) and Ellen’s bullish, good-natured husband Vagn (Anders W Berthelsen). It is a tense experience, because Inger still talks frankly about the invisible creature called “Goldensun” who speaks to her and encourages her to self-harm, and also because she also has a habit of making loud, sexually inappropriate comments, to the uptight and heartless disapproval of a mean guy on the bus who would prefer not to be anywhere near this person. But this man’s sweet 12-year-old son, inevitably more innocently compassionate, makes friends with Inger. Continue reading…

- Rising violence against politicians is an attack on democracy itself | Simon Tisdallby Simon Tisdall on 15. juni 2024 at 16:00
Seemingly random assaults in Britain and other parts of Europe are coming from left and rightThe response of Mette Frederiksen, Denmark’s centre-left prime minister, to being physically assaulted in a Copenhagen street was dignified and very human. “I’m not doing great, and I’m not really myself yet,” she admitted last week. The attack, in which she escaped serious injury, had left her feeling shocked and intimidated, she said.Frederiksen suggested her experience was the culmination of some broadly familiar trends: proliferating social media threats, increasingly aggressive political discourse, a divisive Middle East war. “As a human being, it feels like an attack on me. But I have no doubt it was the prime minister that was hit. In this way, it becomes a kind of attack on all of us.” Continue reading…

My tastebuds have been vanquished, my mouth is a chamber of fire. I have signed a waiver once before for a taste test. It’s one of three varieties of instant noodles manufactured by South Korea’s Samyang Foods, and recalled this week by Danish authorities for being too spicy. Denmark’s national food authority has ordered a recall of three flavours of Buldak spicy instant noodles manufactured by Samyang Foods, warning they could poison consumers because they are so hot. Samyang Foods said it was the first time the company’s products had been recalled because they were deemed too hot, and added that it would work to better understand local regulations in export markets. But honestly, how bad could they be? We stocked up on full-cream milk and plucked four brave taste testers from Guardian Australia’s newsroom to try the noodles deemed too dangerous for Denmark.
